El miedo a siempre-crecientes precios del petróleo
y al creciente sentimiento anti-estadounidense de la OPEP, debe alertar a nuestro
Departamento de Estado y gobierno, de que existe un claro y presente peligro
para nuestra seguridad nacional dentro de nuestro propio hemisferio. Un
líder polítco en España lo acaba de etiquetar como "Un
paraíso para terroristas".
Esto es revelado en una persona últimamente más
peligrosa para nosotros que Osama Bin Laden, Abu Musab Zarqawi, Ayman al-Zawajiri,
o cualquier otro terrorista operando desde el Medio Oriente. ¿Cuál
persona representa tan grave amenaza para nuestro bienestar?. Hugo Chávez,
"líder" de Venezuela.
Mientras Karen Hughes se une a la Secretaria de Estado, Condoleezza
Rice, para buscar vías para ingresar al mundo árabe, ellas,
y aquellos comprometidos con dar seguridad a los Estados Unidos , no deben perder
de vista a la maldad agazapada y lista para golpear en nuestro propio patio
trasero.
El ex-Secretario de Estado Colin Powell es una persona increíble
que ha servido a nuestra nación con gran distinción. Dicho
eso, en relación con el Sr. Chávez y la amenaza que él
representa para los Estados Unidos, el Sr. Powell cayó víctima
de los justificadores de carrera del socialismo y la tiranía dentro del
Departamento de Estado.
La Srita. Rice, que disfruta de todo el respaldo de la Casa
Blanca, debe poner una pared entre ella y tales justificadores.
El Sr. Chávez puede ser muchas cosas. Pero el legítimo
líder de Venezuela, él no lo es. Cualquier lectura justa
y racional del referéndum revocatorio de agosto de 2004 en ese
país para sacarlo a él [del poder] por demanda popular, mostraría
claramente que el Sr. Chávez se robó la elección. Al hacerlo,
él básicamente se instaló a sí mismo como el dictador
de por vida de esa nación rica en petróleo. Trágicamente,
"justa" y "racional" fueron dos palabras ignoradas no sólo
por nuestro propio Departamento de Estado, sino también por el ex-Presidente
Jimmy Carter.
Justo después del referéndum revocatorio de
agosto, el Departamento de Estado de Powell certificó la elección
robada por el Sr. Chávez. Trágico. Pero lo que hizo
el Sr. Carter fue mucho peor. El Sr. Carter y su Centro Carter estuvieron
en Venezuela para el referéndum revocatorio de agosto como "monitorizadores
de la elección". Durante y después de ese referéndum,
el Sr. Carter fue testigo de que la oposición, su compañía
encuestadora estadounidense, y reportes de medios independientes, todos declararon
que la votación iba cerca de 2 a 1 a favor de sacar al Sr. Chávez.
Sin embargo, cuando los votos fueron actualmente "contados", el Sr.
Chávez de alguna manera ganó por ese mismo margen de 2 a 1.
¿Porqué legitimarían nuestro Departamento
de Estado y Jimmy Carter tal elección robada? Para nuestro Departamento
de Estado fue una combinación de tres factores. Primero, miedo
a que el Sr. Chávez pudisese detener el flujo de petróleo hacia
nuestra nación. Segundo, miedo a que eruptase una guerra civil
a escala total si la oposición fuese declarada como ganadora. Y tercero,
y más inquietante, la influencia de los diplomáticos de carrera
en el Departamento de Estado que simpatizan con el Sr. Chávez y su versión
socialista de la utopía.
Para Jimmy Carter, fueron también tres factores.
Primero, y más triste, son sus desesperados intentos por permanecer relevante
en un mundo que no sólo lo dejó a un lado, sino que ha probado
que sus políticas estaban erradas. La próxima, son sus sentimientos
de simpatía hacia el Sr. Chávez y sus diatribas "populistas".
Y finalmente, él quiere permanecer como una espina en las costillas del
Presidente Bush y de la doctrina Bush.
De todas maneras, con estos apoyos, el Sr. Carter y nuestro
Departamento de Estado no sólo se han desgraciado a sí mismos,
sino que han colocado a nuestra nación en un mayor riesgo.
El razonamiento para esto es simple. Por la meras definiciones
usadas por el gobierno de los Estados Unidos, Hugo Chávez es un terrorista,
y un promotor del terrorismo. Peor, él es ahora "presidente"
de un país que en cualquier día dado es el suplidor de petróleo
y gasolina del Nro. 1 al Nro. 4 hacia los Estados Unidos.
¿Cuáles actos definen al Sr. Chávez
como un terrorista? Desde que llegó al poder por primera vez en
1998, el Sr. Chávez ha cortejado abiertamente y se ha reunido con líderes
terroristas alrededor del mundo. El acaba de ser anfitrión de los
mulás de Irán y se unió a ellos en denunciar a los Estados
Unidos.
Su mentor de por vida y modelo a seguir es Fidel Castro de
Cuba. El ha importado miles de agentes de inteligencia cubanos para espiar
y aterrorizar a su propio pueblo. El abiertamente apoya, alberga, y financia
a las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias (FARC) de Colombia.
El está tratando de desestabilizar la presidencia
del aliado de los Estados Unidos, el Presidente colombiano Alvaro Uribe. El
financia y exporta terrorismo por toda América Latina. El le ha
dado la bienvenida a Venezuela y les ha dado refuigio a operativos de Al Qaeda.
Y finalmente, él ha bautizado al Presidente Bush y a los Estados Unidos
como los jurados enemigos de su "revolución".
Durante el primer período [de gobierno] del Presidente
Bush, su Departamento de Estado le falló al ignorar o marginalizar la
tremenda amenaza que representa el Sr. Chávez. Esperemos que con
Condoleezza Rice y Karen Hughes a bordo, el Departamento de Estado, financiado
por quienes pagan impuestos, sirva mejor al presidente y a nuestros ciudadanos.
Hugo Chávez es el más inmediato, más
cercano, y epítome del peligro para nuestro bienestar. El tiempo
para que nosotros reconozcamos eso, está más que pasado.

Fear of ever-rising oil prices and
OPEC's growing anti-American sentiment, must alert our State Department and
government that there is a clear and present danger to our national security
within our own hemisphere. A leading politician in Spain just labeled it "A
haven for terrorists."
This is revealed in a person ultimately more dangerous to
us than Osama bin Laden, Abu Musab Zarqawi, Ayman al-Zawahiri, or any other
terrorist operating out of the Middle East. What person represents such a grave
threat to our well being? Hugo Chavez, "leader" of Venezuela.
As Karen Hughes joins Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
to seek inroads into the Arab world, they, and those committed to securing the
United States, must not lose sight of the evil coiled and ready to strike in
our very back yard.
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell is an incredible person
who has served our nation with great distinction. That said, with regard to
Mr. Chavez and the threat he represents to the U.S., Mr. Powell fell victim
to the career apologists of socialism and tyranny within the State Department.
Miss Rice, who enjoys full White House backing, must wall
off such apologists.
Mr. Chavez may be many things. But legitimate leader of Venezuela,
he is not. Any fair and rational reading of the August 2004 recall referendum
in that country to oust him by popular demand would clearly show Mr. Chavez
stole the election. In so doing, he basically installed himself as dictator
for life of that oil-rich nation. Tragically, "fair" and "rational"
were two words ignored not only by our own State Department but by former President
Jimmy Carter as well.
Right after the August recall referendum, the Powell State
Department certified Mr. Chavez's stolen election. Tragic. But what Mr. Carter
did was much worse. Mr. Carter and his Carter Center were in Venezuela for the
August recall referendum as "election monitors." During and after
that referendum, Mr. Carter was witness to the opposition, its American polling
company and independent media outlets all declaring the vote running about 2-1
in favor of ousting Mr. Chavez. However, when the votes were actually "counted,"
Mr. Chavez somehow won by that same 2-1 margin.
Why would our State Department and Jimmy Carter legitimize
such a stolen election? For our State Department, it was a combination of three
factors. First, fear Mr. Chavez might stop the oil flow to our nation. Second,
fear that if the opposition were declared the winner, a full-scale civil war
would erupt. And third, and most disturbing, the influence of career diplomats
in the State Department who sympathize with Mr. Chavez and his socialist version
of utopia.
For Jimmy Carter, it was also three factors. First, and most
sad, are his desperate attempts to stay relevant in a world that has not only
passed him by but proven his policies wrong. Next, are his sympathetic feelings
toward Mr. Chavez and his "populist" diatribes. And finally, he wants
to remain a thorn in the side of President Bush and the Bush doctrine.
Regardless, with these endorsements, Mr. Carter and our State
Department have not only disgraced themselves but put our nation more at risk.
The reasoning for this is simple. By the very definitions used by the U.S. government,
Hugo Chavez is a terrorist, and a sponsor of terrorism. Worse, he is now "president"
of a country that on any given day is the No. 1 to No. 4 supplier of oil and
gasoline to the United States.
What acts define Mr. Chavez as a terrorist? Since first coming
to power in 1998, Mr. Chavez has openly courted and met with terrorist leaders
from around the world. He just hosted the mullahs of Iran and joined them in
denouncing the United States. His mentor for life and role model is Cuba's Fidel
Castro. He has imported thousands of Cuban intelligence agents to spy on and
terrorize his own people. He openly supports, harbors, and bankrolls the Revolutionary
Armed Forces (FARC) of Colombia. He is trying to destabilize the presidency
of U.S. ally Colombian President Alvaro Uribe. He bankrolls and exports terrorism
throughout Latin America. He has welcomed al Qaeda operatives into Venezuela
and given them refuge. And finally, he has named President Bush and the United
States as the sworn enemies of his "revolution."
In President Bush's first term, his State Department let
him down by ignoring or marginalizing the tremendous threat posed by Mr. Chavez.
Let's hope that with Condoleezza Rice and Karen Hughes on board, the taxpayer-funded
State Department will better serve the president and our citizens.
Hugo Chavez is the most immediate, closest, ultimate danger
to our well-being. It's well past time we acknowledge that.
